After all the excitement of Christmas, Zero relaxed for a few days, then it was right back to party mode. New Year’s Eve was another exciting event for us all.

On New Year’s Eve, Zero came with us to Random Guy’s brother’s house. There were 5 of us including a 7 year old party planner who had everything set for a wonderful evening. She hadn’t planned for a double feature of Gladiator 2 and Super Bad, but she allowed it.

Just before midnight we cut Super Bad short and went on the patio to celebrate with our little champaigns. Their house is up by Westwood Lake, so it overlooks most of Nanaimo. We were able to see all the fireworks going off all across town. They were tiny, but it was so cool. We went inside to dance around the kitchen, then made some balloon animals and finally decided it was time to sleep.

We were staying in their Airbnb suite for the night, so Random Guy took Zero’s litter box out through the front door and came back in to see why I was taking so long. Zero was no where to be found. I shook his food and he didn’t come. That seemed impossible. I was staying calm because I figured where would he have gone? He had to be in the house.

Random Guy went to see if he had lifted the litterbox and somehow not noticed Zero was inside. On his way back, he saw Zero staring at him … from the roof. He ran inside, up the stairs, and jumped over the railing, onto the roof’s edging and held onto the railing from the other side. Zero was down at the end. I went over to him, soaking my socks, with a fist full of cat food. He sniffed it from the other side and then moved along to see Random Guy. He snatched the bundle of joy up and shoved him into my arms as his brother grabbed him to assist with a bit of balance. We moved inside, Zero sprung from my arms and sat in the kitchen. What a night.

It’s so funny to me that he was outside for 20-30 minutes because he must have seen us all dancing around in the kitchen from outside and wondered why. He also must have just started to realize that he was locked out and started trying to figure out where to go.

We went to the Airbnb for a restless night of sleep, stirred by a cat who has become too used to having a larger space to roam. In the morning, we left him in the main house and went to the beach to run into the ocean. Once cleansed, the new year had begun and we returned for a lovely brunch.
