Out for a Stroll
On Easter Sunday, I took Zero out for a long walk. We never really get that far, but I like how he enjoys the yard and exploring here is enough for him. We went to the garden bed on the far side of the back yard, over to the hot tub and back again. Then he was ready to head to the gate on the other end of the yard so that he could explore the front yard. I followed him, attached by leash as he marched over to the gate.
Mr. Raccoon Appears
Suddenly, he paused. I looked up, and saw a little face staring back at us through the fence. At first, I thought it was a cat but then I recognized the mask and realized it was a raccoon. The little guy was assessing the yard. He had seen Zero right away. Zero stared intently, then took a few minutes to sniff the air. The raccoon disappeared.
“Just Gonna Sneak By Ya”
I heard a rustling in the neighbor’s yard. I assumed he was going to go around. My dad has mentioned the backyard is their highway for these guys to the lot behind the house.

Sure enough, the raccoon’s little hands appeared next, gripping a fence panel near the back corner of the yard. He hoisted his chunky body up to the top of the 4-foot fence, then gracefully backed his way over the corner and to the far fence lining the back of the yard. He stared at us for a moment, and Zero started to growl. In this moment, I thought the raccoon had changed his tune about keeping his distance. I pulled Zero back, he leaned forward still.
It’s Not Goodbye, It’s See You Later <3
Then the raccoon then began his decent. He grasped one fence panel and Zero and I watched his strong little hands move one by one down the fence panel, his body hidden by the paneling, as he lowered himself to the ground on the other side. And that was all. I told Zero he was lucky that Mr. Raccoon gave him so much space. Zero sniffed the air, still processing.

Final Thoughts
I love seeing Zero in the presence of a raccoon because his tail expands in the best way and he looks like a raccoon himself. His poofy tail may be one of the best things about him in my eyes.
